What you accomplished this year

December 21, 2012

http://www.taxwarriors.com/Portals/127975/images/2013-January-calendar-resized-600.jpgIn less than a month, the world will be resolution-crazy. What are you going to do that’s different than what you did last year? The question is a good one, a way to challenge yourself about what you think you can do better. The beginning of a brand new, unspoiled year is a good time to have that internal discussion and to commit to something better.

But the end of the year is a good time to do something just as positive–to take stock and appreciate what you’ve done over the ┬ápast year that’s pushed you forward.

In other words, looking at what’s wrong and what you want to change is only half the picture. Before you do that, you should look at what’s right, and where you’ve done well. It keeps things in balance.

For me, the list is pretty impressive, if I do say so myself.

  • By the end of this calendar year, this blog will have had around 17,000 more hits than it had last year. That’s an increase of almost 70%. We’re on track to break 100,000 hits early next year.
  • I have finally gotten out of the perpetual first-draft issue with my work in progress and have done almost three sets of revisions. It’s not awful.
  • I have attracted a writing partner and will soon join a critique group.
  • I have a number of people at work very excited to be working with me soon because of my writing abilities and creativity.
  • I have completed a short story that probably isn’t great, but doesn’t suck, either. (My last one wasn’t very good.)
  • I have written a lot of words, many of them well chosen and assembled.

So before you take stock of all the places where you are lacking, how about taking stock of the places where you kick butt?

What did you accomplish this year?

An excellent point. You have to look at both sides of the equation t o get an accurate picture.

This year I started my novel and I’ve completed 7 chapters. In previous attempts, I’d get to 4 or 5 and then quit. :D

    Thanks, Cheri!

Diane, are you soloing, or do you have a critique group or writing partner to help keep you motivated?

I’m curious to find out what blog platform you happen to be using? I’m having some minor security problems with my latest site and I would like to find
something more secure. Do you have any suggestions?

I use WordPress and I haven’t had security issues to this point. Beyond that I’m not qualified to give security advice.
