Meet the Faculty: Julie Compton

August 24, 2012

Julie Compton, Author and 2012 Person of Renown

Julie Compton’s debut legal thriller, Tell No Lies, earned a starred review from Kirkus, which called the novel a “taut, tense cautionary tale complete with courtroom drama and a surprise ending.” Kirkus aptly described Julie’s second novel, Rescuing Olivia, as “a pleasing hybrid of fairy tale and contemporary thriller,” and Publisher’s Weekly praised it as an “intense, entertaining second novel” with a “super-satisfying resolution.” A lawyer by profession, Julie last practiced as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice. She now writes full-time and speaks frequently about writing and publishing. Visit her website:

Signature Workshop
Backstory: A Fine Balance- Parts I & II” – with Jamie Morris – Friday, October 19, 8:30-10:00 AM & 1:30-3:00 PM
Backstory is essential to the writing of any narrative – long or short, fiction or memoir. Used correctly, backstory adds depth to plot; reveals character; varies pacing; and creates suspense. Used incorrectly, backstory can bring readers to a grinding halt, muddy plot, and dissipate hard-earned literary tension! In this two-part workshop, internationally published author Julie Compton and writing coach and Director of Woodstream Writers, Jamie Morris, will show you how to avoid those pitfalls and make the most of backstory.

Julie is Keynote Speaker for Friday Evening’s Dinner, and Person of Renown for FWA Collection 4 – My Wheels.

To see Julie by special appointment, check the website prior to the conference or the FWA registration desk at the conference. Note: Conference attendance is required for interviews.
