August 31, 2012

Cristina Kessler, Author – Juvenile

Cristina Kessler is an award-winning children’s author of cross-cultural books for ages 8 through YA. All her books are set in Africa where she lived for 19 years. Among her numerous awards and recognitionsare those from The African Studies Association, ASPCA, Bank Street College, Best Books from NY Public Libraries, International Reading Association, and most recently the Royal Palm Literary Awards. She writes only about the places she knows first-hand, and hopes that all her readers feel like they’ve just been to Africa when they finish reading one of her books.

Signature Workshop
“Behind the Books” – Friday, October 19, 8:30-10:00 AM
Every writer has their own basket of techniques for getting their stories down on paper. My basket involves: Choosing my audience—deciding what age group the story best suits; Research—a huge part in my books. I had the distinct advantage of living in the places I write about. My two most valuable tools are photos and journals; Deciding whether to write fiction or non-fiction—the stories behind my stories; I always strive to take my readers to Africa – rather than bring Africa to them; Engaging my readers by involving them in the setting and character’s culture. Also, how long does it take, start to finish? We will also cover fun little things to do when the writing slows down.

“Questions, Please!” – Saturday, October 20, 7:00-8:00 AM
This workshop is a totally interactive, open Q&A session. The topics will be determined by the attendees. We can discuss all things about writing, publishing, visiting author programs, anything you want pertaining to writing for children and YAs. There will also be fun but challenging writing exercises incorporated into the session that a writer can always use when stalled.

To see Cristina by special appointment, check the website prior to the conference or the FWA registration desk at the conference. Note: Conference attendance is required for interviews.
