Exercise Wednesday: What Scares You?

November 7, 2012

When I was very young, I went to the snake house at the National Zoo in Washington, DC. I had no idea what was what. I was little. If I could read, I probably wasn’t paying attention. Until I saw the first snake. The way the story’s told, I let out a screech so terrifying that people thought one of the snakes might have gotten out.

Suffice it to say, that if I were Indiana Jones, I would have decided that the Nazis had markings on only one side of their Headpiece of the Staff of Ra, so they’d never, ever find the Ark, and we could just leave it there, rather than going down to the snake-filled floor of the Well of Souls to get shut in by Belloq.

I’m not going to say I turn into a blubbering, useless piece of fear when there are snakes nearby… Okay, actually, I am. I turn into a blubbering, useless piece of fear when there are snakes nearby. My greatest fear is this episode of Fear Factor.

Today, the writing exercise is to take your character’s worst fear and make them face it. I’m not talking about loneliness or rejection this time. I mean a physical fear. Heights. Snakes. Bugs. Leisure suits.

Time: 25 minutes

Chris, looking at that photo and immediately imagine those snakes slithering across my arms. And you want me to write about it? Heck, I’m sprinting out of here.
