Exercise Wednesday: The Holidays
This year, our pre-holiday schedule is pretty busy. We were cruising during Thanksgiving, when the tree and the rest of the decorations normally go up.
The weekend after we got back, I went to Tough Mudder and my wife went hiking for the weekend. Neither of us were excited about the work of getting all the holiday stuff from the attic that Sunday.
Then I had a work thing the next Saturday. So my wife suggested that we just put the tree up and ignore the rest of the holiday stuff. I was fine with it. But my daughter is in college and has not been home in almost four months. Do I even need to tell you whether she was okay with the idea?
How about your characters? What is Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Festivus, and Capital One Bowl Week like for your characters? Is this the first holiday season after a major loss? Is it just another in a long series of seemingly happy holiday seasons? Is it the first holiday with a new child, or the first holiday after the last child has left to build their own life? Maybe it’s the first holiday as a grandparent. And maybe one of the grandparents isn’t as excited at the prospect as they figured and confused.
Or maybe none of those things is right.
Today’s challenge is quite simple: Write a story about your characters’ holiday.
Time limit: 20 minutes
