Exercise Wednesday: Technically, it was murder…

January 30, 2013

That’s gonna leave a mark.

The FWA Collection is coming up and you need to get ready for it. The theme this year is “It’s a Crime.” Our person of renown is the renowned Edna Buchanan. She’s going to pick her favorite ten entries of all the entries accepted for publication. How cool would it be if she picked yours?

If you’re interested, you can check out the rules, here.

To help you in this monumental, and very important task, our prompt today talks specifically about crime. It talks specifically about a specific crime–murder. Usually when someone starts a sentence by saying, “Technically, it was whatever…”, it really wasn’t whatever because there were extenuating circumstances.

So today’s exercise is a challenge to write a story where the crime violated the letter of the law, but not the spirit. Or, if you like, maybe the crime actually violated both the letter and the spirit of the law but the assailant didn’t think so. Beyond that, you’re on your own.

Time limit: 30 minutes
