Industry News: You absolutely positively have to understand this business or it will crush you

March 9, 2013

As difficult as it may be to believe, there is wisdom to be gained on the Internet that doesn’t come from this website. When that happens, as a savvy, lazy, and conscientious blogger, I should set you up with that wisdom as quickly as possible.

The simple fact of the matter is, the publishing industry is changing. It’s been changing radically for the past five years or so. The recession and the e-book revolution seemed to sound the death knell for big-time New York City publishing. Except it didn’t.

At the end of the day, this is a business. And while the business is filled with people who care about books and authors, the purpose of the publishing industry–like any other industry–is to make money. Maybe it’s mercenary. Maybe it’s evil. And maybe it’s just what people do–if someone offers to pay me for writing, I probably won’t turn it down. But the purpose is to make money, which means that you, dear writer, are a means to an end. You’re a commodity.

You can rebel at the injustice and greed of it all, but it doesn’t change the facts of business. So maybe the best approach is to learn the rules so you can put them to work to your advantage. This blog post–which came to me highly recommended–is a great start.

As the person who recommended it to me said, read it. Read the whole post. You don’t have to believe it–though it makes sense to me–but you have to be exposed to it.

So what do you think? Do you buy this? Dismiss it? Are you concerned by what it says? Or do you see opportunity?

Thanks Chris. Incredibly Eye-opening blog post you referenced. Seems like Julie Compton has the right idea. Everything is in flux in publishing and the better you see what’s going on the less likely you are to get hosed. The power in publishing is up for grabs. Interesting to see how this plays out.

Excellent. Thank you. Knew it, but like having it spelled out. All we can do is keep writing and keep trying to find avenues to our readers. I quit whining a long time ago.

Love the blog. Every business in the world has to change or it will be the next Edsel. For those that can remember it or if you never seen one, wrong product will die quick without changing. Learning life in the car business. What ever they say it was before my time.
