The ‘Greatest Writers Conference on Earth’ Shines a Spotlight on Chad Rhoad

June 8, 2013

“Unless you’re already a bestselling author or you know someone, you’ll never get published.”

How many times have we heard that? Hello-o-o? Look at that statement carefully, particularly the “or you know someone” part. That’s the key to becoming published: knowing someone.

Which is one good reason to attend conferences—you get to know people in the industry. At FWA’s annual conference October 18-20 at the Orlando Marriott Lake Mary, there’ll be plenty of time for hobnobbing. But did you know there’s also a chance to reserve one-on-one time with faculty, including, uh, agents, acquisition editors, and publishers?

Hence, today’s spotlight. Meet Chad Rhoad, senior commissioning editor at The History Press in Charleston, South Carolina, whose authors hail from South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. He has commissioned such titles as Marist Football: Inside the War Eagle Tradition, Columbia Food, The Golden Era in St. Petersburg, and Florida in the Great Depression. Chad has a BA in English and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of South Carolina in Columbia. He has worked for years as editor of The Messenger in Hartsville, South Carolina, and is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Chad has also published fiction in several journals and recently completed his first novel.

The History Press is searching for local authors and books on the history and culture of their native cities/counties, from simple brief histories of a city to lost restaurants to stories of cities during the Civil War, Revolutionary War, and World Wars. They want manuscripts that seek to celebrate and document the history of people/places/events that may have been overlooked. Visit www.historypress.net to check out their catalogue.

Don’t write in the history genre? No problem! Among the six agents, five traditional publishers, two subsidy publishers, 24 authors and industry experts, and three critique faculty members who’ll be in attendance, you’ll find the expertise you’re looking for.

Schedules are filling up, so if you plan to book an appointment with Chad or any of the other faculty, please don’t delay.
