Exercise Wednesday: It was a dark and stormy night…

July 24, 2013

It’s perhaps the most cliched writing cliche ever in the history of writing cliches. There’s so much wrong with it that the entire Internet can’t contain the entire description. But it’s your starting point today. But instead of using that as a jumping off point for writing a paragraph or two of prose, I’d like you to try something different.

I want you to write a series of bullets that answer the question and then what?

Like this…it was a dark and stormy night. (And then what?)

She took her flashlight with her into the cellar. (And then what?)

The washing machine played that stupid little song it plays when the wash is done. (And then what?)

The power went out. (And then what?)

Start at the beginning and make a list until there is no more and then what or until you run out of time.

Time limit: 20 minutes
