Come Home from the Annual Conference with Unexpected Bounty. Guaranteed.

September 15, 2013

Prizes aren’t high on the list for reasons folks will attend the 2013 Florida Writers Conference, “The Greatest Writers Conference on Earth.” But they are a perk.

FWA members and supporters are generous when it comes to donating prizes, and if you attend the conference, you are guaranteed to win something worth $100, maybe more. Or cash. We have that kind of raffle, too.

If you win a prize, you may get your book published. Or attend next year’s annual conference or a mini-conference for free. Or win a free interview. Or see Circ du Soleil. Or win a Kindle. Or go to dinner. We’re not saying you will win these particular prizes, but your odds are better than, say, with the Lotto. And there’s a cool prize worth more than $100 that everyone wins. But more about that later.

The regular drawings

Getting tickets for the conference drawings is easy. For every workshop you attend, fill out a quarter-page evaluation form and exchange it for a ticket (two on Sunday). All weekend these tickets accumulate in the raffle-bowl, where they stay for the entire conference (unless it wins a prize). This means a ticket earned on Friday could win a Grand Prize on Sunday. The more tickets you earn, the better your chances of winning. The number of tickets you earn determines how many chances you have to win a prize, so you could come home with several.

Tax Credits

Among the prizes:

  • Free 2014 annual conference registration

  • 10 ebook conversions, 3 cover designs from Expert Subjects

  • 2 $100 certificates from Woodstream Writers

  • Circ du Soleil from Mark Newhouse

  • Free mini-conference

  • Free interviews

  • More than 30 prizes anticipated in all; please see the conference program  for a more complete list

There’s another prize—the “Exhibitor Basket”—that’s worth more than $1,000. This basket contains an assortment of items donated by participating conference exhibitors. To be eligible to win, simply find the Exhibitor Basket half-page signup sheet in your goodie bag and stop by to see each participating exhibitor to have the sheet signed. When all have signed, place the sheet in the designated receptacle in the Silent Auction room. The drawing for the basket occurs on Sunday, and the contents include, among other things:

  • A Kindle from Expert Subjects

  • Cover design & $100 discount from Peppertree Press

  • $500 discount from Telemachus Press

  • $25 Amazon Gift Card + $75 discount for ebook full wrap from Sprinkles On Top Studios

  • $50 Gift Card to Darden Restaurant Chain + baby pine tree from Yellow Pine Publishing

  • $65 year’s membership from Florida Authors and Publishers Association

The 50-50

We’ll also hold the 50-50 drawing for the Florida Writers Foundation, where several lucky folks will come home with a pocketful of cash while FWF garners a matching amount for its programs to promote literacy.

For Everyone

As for the prize that everyone wins, it’ll be right in your goodie bag. It’s a book, How I Sold 1 Million eBooks in 5 Months by John Locke, plus a $100 certificate of service from Locke’s publisher, Telemachus Press.

What This Means to You

Okay, we know you come to the conference to meet with agents, publishers, and professional faculty; to stay abreast of the industry and your craft through workshops; to network with fellow writers; and maybe to win an RPLA or two. But winning a door prize—be it publication of your book, a free conference, or any of the others—would be a cool side benefit, don’t you think?

“The Greatest Writers Conference on Earth” will be held October 18-20, 2013, at the Orlando Marriott Lake Mary. See the FWA website,, to learn more, to register, and to make your agent appointments. Also check out the full set of FAQs. Questions? Contact
