Donate books to help prisoners

September 28, 2013

What?

If you have gently used (or new) books you’d like to find a useful home, we’re asking you to bring them to this year’s Florida Writers Conference to donate to the Florida Prison system for inmates’ use.

Who?

You

Where? When?

This year’s Florida Writers Conference to be held October 18-20 at the Orlando Marriott Lake Mary.

How?

Bring your books to the conference and place them in the festively adorned donation boxes placed at strategic locations throughout the venue. The annoying guy in the Hawaiian shirts will be issuing reminders at almost every break.

Why?

The Florida Writers Foundation is dedicated to fighting illiteracy, and the prison system is a key front in that fight. Illiteracy is a key determining factor for arrest and illiterate convicts are far more likely to re-enter the prison system. Your gift of books will help inmates build their reading skills and contribute to their future well being.

    Chris,

Pocket book sizes are okay, right? They don’t all have to be hardback?

Any donation is fine. Hard cover or paperback.

I have 6 or more boxes of book that I’ve culled from my library, and I would be happy to donate them. Unfortunately I am not going to the convention (I have a conflict). If someone would pick them up from Brooksville they’re yours. There are mysteries, science fiction, romance, paranormal, nonfiction (cookbooks and various other topics) and even some “literature.”
