A Happy Conference Perk (Can You Spell Yum-O?)

October 15, 2013

The Orlando Marriott Lake Mary has an award-winning chef, and at our annual conference, you’ll have ample opportunity to find out why he’s won so many awards. There’s more to meals than just eating, though the eating part is amazing. We tried to anticipate your questions.

 5 Star Restaurant Rating

Are all meals included in the registration fee?

Yes. Think of the conference as a continuous business meeting and of the meals as an integral part of that meeting. Meals provide a time not only to network with other attendees but also to conduct FWA business. During Friday’s lunch, we’ll introduce FWA’s Collection #5: It’s a Crime. During Friday’s dinner, we’ll have our keynote address by the Collection’s person of Renown, Michael Wiley. During Saturday’s lunch, we’ll present the President’s Award and the Vice President’s Award, hand out the Youth Royal Palm Literary Award competition, recognize FWA leaders from around the state, and hold a brief membership meeting. During Saturday night’s Awards Banquet, we’ll announce the winners of the Royal Palm Literary Awards competition, which (trust us) is exciting.

May I request food and drink not on FWA’s menu?

There’s a place on your registration form (under “special dietary restrictions”) where you may list any food allergies or other dietary restrictions, but please remember that the kitchen has to provide outstanding meals in a short period of time. That means while the hotel tries to accommodate special requests, we can’t make any guarantees.

Why are the front tables taken by the time I arrive?

Speakers are asked to sit near the podium, and faculty members are invited to sit in front as a courtesy. You’re welcome to sit anywhere not marked “reserved.”

What’s for breakfast?

On Friday and Saturday, we’ll have a full breakfast buffet, including juices, eggs, bacon, sausage, breads, jams, bagels, fresh fruit, and more. Sunday will feature a continental breakfast.

When is breakfast?

Breakfast starts at 7:00 on Friday, 8:00 on Saturday, and 8:00 on Sunday. Throughout the weekend, we suggest you check the schedule, which will be posted at the conference and is printed in your conference program. We’re doing genre breakfasts again, and you’ll see the various genre-signs in stanchions at each table. There’s also a “map” in your conference program and on the conference signage.

Where can I find snacks, coffee, and soft drinks during the day?

You’ll never go hungry—or thirsty. Water coolers and cups will be placed strategically in the Grand Foyer all day. During breaks (10:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m.), we’ll have soft drinks, coffee, and light snacks in or near the workshop rooms, where you can network with exhibitors and fellow writers.

“The Greatest Writers Conference on Earth” will be held October 18-20, 2013, at the Orlando Marriott Lake Mary.
